Globalization, Transportation, Energy and Environment
Few parts of the economy have experienced more change than
transportation and logistics along with energy and the environment as the
knowledge age unfolded. Today, fast trains are common in all of Europe, Japan
and now in China. The 1990s cutting edge applications of information technology
(IT) to transportation, such as smart traffic control and smart cars are now evolving into a future of autonomous vehicles (cars, trucks, ships and
airplanes including drones and other robotic
guided machines). Flying personal vehicles until recently were seen as unlikely
to enter the market before the last half of the 21st century but are a
present-day reality with 3 firms planning to offer them within a year. Recent
and continuing information technology and information communications technology
(ICT) developments that enable appropriate control systems to support safe and
increasingly more efficient mobility and navigation are at the heart of a range
of unheard-of before actual and envisioned possibilities.
Rapid parallel advances in energy and environment technologies made possible
self- propelled vehicles like lawn mowers and crop reapers that are guided by
robotic technology and are mobilized by fuel cells made from the clippings. Expanding globalization and knowledge sharing are accelerating the fusion of transportation, energy and environmental
research that are contributing to new ways of living, working and
playing. RR&S Associates have participated in
the development and application of many forefront innovations and have a vision
for the future of efficient and equable mobility, sustained environment and
access all.
